What Lightroom Preset File Formats Exist?

Lightroom presets come in various file formats, each compatible with specific versions of Lightroom. Here’s a breakdown of the three main preset formats:

  1. .XMP Presets:

    • Compatible with: Lightroom Classic CC (version 7.3 and later), Lightroom CC (cloud-based version), and Adobe Camera Raw.

  2. .LRTEMPLATE Presets:

    • Compatible with: Lightroom 4, 5, 6, and Lightroom Classic CC (version 7.2 and earlier).
    • Note: These presets are based on the older .lrtemplate format, which is specific to Lightroom. .lrtemplate presets are not compatible with newer versions of Lightroom Classic CC and Lightroom CC (cloud-based) without conversion.

  3. .DNG Presets:

    • Compatible with: Lightroom Mobile (iOS and Android), Lightroom CC (cloud-based), and Lightroom Classic CC.
    • Note: These are DNG (Digital Negative) image files with preset settings embedded as metadata.
